This will be a Round Robin tournament in the arena. All players will be flying the same fighter type. This fighter will be one with lb or ofc weapons only.

I'll play! Is the plan to have a 1v1 round robin, or some kind of multiplayer match system? Playing every possible 4-way matchup could work for small numbers of players, but the number of games required gets totally unreasonable if there are more than 10 or so.

At 10 players, there would be 210 games, about the same number as there were in the AoW 1v1 tourney I ran a while back. Four player VP games are a lot slower though than AoW 1v1 (which were often only 7-10 moves long), so it would surely take many months for all the games to get finished. And with 14 players we'd be looking at 1001 games. Our 2011 tourney would probably still be going in 2015, if that was the plan...

You forget that all the games can be run at the same time. I have not decided the format of number of players. I am waiting to see how many people we have.

Not at all. It is indeed possible to play several games at once, but there's a practical limit to how much a player is willing to put up with. If we go for four player games with ten total players, we'd each be looking at 84 games. That's a little more than 20% of the VP games I've played in the four years I've been here! I'd certainly prefer not to play them all simultaneously (I rarely play more than two or three at a time, in normal circumstances).

For comparison, in the round robin part of the 1v1 AoW tourney was 110 games, with each player having 20 games to play (two against each of their 10 opponents), and it took 46 days. The combinatorial explosion and the longer turns with more than 2 players are what motivated me to stick with 1v1 games for the tourneys I've organized. If you can come up with a workable solution to these challenges though, go for it!

If you're interested, the calculation I'm doing to find the number of games is a "combination". It's the same formula as the binomial coefficient which we discussed here on the forum when Neko was setting up the new version of the AoW stats calculator. The number of ways to set up games between k players selected from a group of n is C(n, k) = n!/k!(n-k)! (where x! means the factorial of x: x*(x-1)*(x-2)*...*2*1).

So for 10 players in 4-player games, we have:
C(10, 4) = 10!/6!4!
Canceling the common factors in 10! and 6! gives:
C(10, 4) = (10*9*8*7)/(4*3*2*1) = 5040 / 24 = 210

The same formula can be used to compute the number of matches for each player. In this case, we count the number of sets of three opponents a player can meet, out of the nine other players:
C(9, 3) = 9!/6!3! = (9*8*7)/(3*2*1) = 504/6 = 84

We only have 5 right now. I will leave the sign up open until the end of the month. As it stands now we are looking at 1-on-1 fights. I am thinking 2 fighters will be used, Spitfire & Badger. You face each opponent once with each fighter. Right now that would mean 8 fights each. If there is a tie at the end the Spark & Hailstorm will be used.

Will those matches be played with both players using the same fighter at the same time? I find duels between identical fighters much less interesting then when there are some differences in weaponry and/or maneuvering capability on the two sides. When everyone is equal, it tends to simply come down to who's shots hit, as both sides are usually shooting at the same time with the same hit probabilities. And actually a matchup between a Spitfire and a Badger wouldn't be as exciting as some other match ups because they both have similar effective ranges (very dangerous at 1-2 hexes, much less so at longer ranges).

Despite my rather opinionated comments here, I'm definitely interested in playing in the tourney regardless of the details of the setup. If my suggestions don't match up with what you want the tourney to be, please feel free to ignore them.
